A Washington hiker is lucky to be alive after what was supposed to be a simple shortcut through the forest turned into a five-day survival nightmare. Injured, dehydrated, and lost deep in the Suquamish wilderness, the man was rescued in a dramatic overnight operation after local residents heard his faint cries for help.

Shortcut Leads to Disaster

The hiker, whose name has not been released, was dropped off near a remote road in Suquamish, Washington, in late June 2025. Hoping to save time, he decided to take a shortcut through unmarked forest. But after falling from a tree and injuring himself, he became lost in the dense terrain.

With no food, little water, and no clear sense of direction, the man wandered the wilderness for four to five days. His situation worsened as he became dehydrated and exhausted.

Voice in the Woods Sparks Rescue

Around midnight on June 21, a nearby resident heard faint calls for help coming from deep within the trees. Realizing someone was in distress, they called 911. Responding deputies from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office heard the man’s voice as well, describing a fall from a tree and pleading for help.

Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Effort

Several rescue teams—including Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Suquamish Tribal Police, Olympic Mountain Rescue, and Kitsap Search Dogs—joined the overnight search. After nearly six hours, the lost hiker was located at around 7:00 a.m.

Weak and injured, he was carried out on a stretcher and taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center for treatment.
